Everett worker rescued after hours trapped in scrap metal shredder, reports say
A man working at a scrap metal business in Everett was rescued Thursday afternoon after hours spent trapped in a metal shredding machine, reports said.
According to CBS Boston, an employee of Scrap-It Inc., a scrap metal recycling center, was caught in the shredder for several hours Thursday afternoon, requiring the help of first responders from four cities to free him.
The man is an experienced worker whose leg was trapped in the shredder as he worked near the machine, the network said.
After the man was trapped around 3:30 p.m., first responders from multiple cities spent about three hours freeing him. WCVB reported that the Boston Fire Department's technical rescue unit — which specializes in extricating people from difficult-to-reach situations — responded to the scene, as did a physician in surgical gear. The man was freed and brought to a hospital around 6:30 p.m.
Representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration responded to the scrapyard as well, Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria told the news networks at the scene.
"My thoughts are with the accident victim and I am grateful for the [Everett Fire Department] and all the first responders for their efforts in a difficult rescue operation," he said.
